On an official historic visit to the trading floor, EGX welcomed the African businessman, Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Group, at its historic headquarters downtown Cairo. During the visit, they discussed cooperation opportunities and opening channels of cross-border capital flows between North and West African continent.
The event featured the participation of Dr. Mohamed Awad, Chairman of General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI); Mr. Mohamed Sabry, EGX Vice Chairman; Mr. Temi Popoola, GMD and CEO of Nigerian Stock Exchange (NGX Group); Dr. George Elombi, President and Chairman of African Export-Import Bank AFREXIMBANK; Mr. Murat Erden, Group Chief Financial Officer, CFO Dangote; Hatem Eldemerdash, Global Head and Director of Advisory & Capital Markets at Afreximbank; Alhaji (Dr.) Umaru Kwairanga, Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group); Neo Mooki, Chairperson of Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE); besides a number of leaders of capital market in Egypt and Africa.
In his opening speech, EGX Executive Chairman, Omar Radwan revealed the strategic plan targeting issuing Egyptian Depository Receipts (EDRs) for the shares of affiliated companies of the huge industrial Dangote Group. He describes this step as a pivotal opportunity to achieve financial integration and joint capital formation across the continent.
EGX Executive Chairman emphasized that the structure of EDRs is of a dual and direct investment value for investors and institutions in Egypt and the region. It provides an investment tool for domestic investors allowing diversified portfolios and direct access to major industrial assets in West Africa with strong returns without the risk or complications of cross-border cash transfers.
Omar Radwan clarified that the Egyptian Exchange is currently studying with leaders of Dangote Group the possibility of launching these EDRs during the coming period. He pointed out that the financial link through depository receipts is the foundation of an economic and industrial partnership connecting Egypt?s production and logistics with the huge consumer market West Africa.
EGX Executive Chairman added that the visit of Mr. Aliko Dangote coincides with the unprecedented dynamic growth phase of the Egyptian financial market. He said ?EGX achieved historic record-breaking numbers in its main indices, led by the main index EGX30, amidst a significant rise in the market capitalization and liquidity flows. These indicators confirm the strength of the financial status of the Egyptian listed companies and the growing trust of institutional and international investors in the solidity and attractiveness of the market.?
